Not long ago, A Japanese furniture retail company recalls diatomaceous earth products on asbestos concerns.

Inhalation of asbestos fibers is known to cause several types of cancer, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Regarding to the Japanese furniture and home accessories retailer company announced a voluntary recall of nine types of diatomaceous earth bath mats and coasters due to possibly excessive levels of the carcinogen asbestos in December 2020.

Some people would think that’s the diatomaceous earth contain the asbestos due to the event, let’s to make it clear about this matter:

Diatomaceous earth is a kind of biochemical sedimentary rock, it is deposited by the cell wall of diatoms, light yellow or light gray, soft and light, and can be easily ground into powder, low density, porous, rough, and strong Water absorption.

Since diatomaceous earth cannot be solidified by itself, lime and paper pulp are mostly used as "binders". However, some factories and companies to use asbestos to instead of pulp to reduce the cost.
